Dear Leos

How have your holidays been? Hope you all are having your well-deserved FUN. :)

The time of the year is back, and it's time to welcome our new year 1s. This year's CCA Fiesta will be held on the 18-19th April.

And guess what, this year's CCA Fiesta will be held at our very own new block, Seventy3, for the veryFIRST time !!!!

Volunteers will be needed to promote Leo Club to the year 1s, and CCA points will be rewarded.

As you may have heard! CompassionAid is around the corner! CompassionAid is a 2 part event consisting of Hamper Sales and Performance Night! And the performance night is called FUN FUND NIGHT which is going to happen on:

What is this FUN FUND NIGHT about? It is actually a charity night for us and there will be alot of awesome performance from our very own talented Arts and Culture Clubs of Ngee Ann Polytechnic! Expect from KPOP dances, acts, singing and many more!

This year,CompassionAid will be working with Lions' Befriender's Service Association in providing families under their care with basic nessecities through our hampers. Our upcoming project is a joint effort with 6 other Community Service Clubs to raise funds! Find more info below!

We will be having an upcoming fund raising event organized by the various community service clubs. The actual event will be held in January in favour of the Chinese New Year festive season in February. Our beneficiary will be elderly living in one-room flats under Lions Befrienders Service Association (LBSA). We would like to share our joy with them during this festive season!

We have 2 segments for fund raising, (1) the performance and (2) the sales of hampers. Right now, we are recruiting volunteers to help us out in this event!

Yellow Ribbon Street Sales Day

Hello Leos!

I know that the study break is coming and everyone will be busy mugging for the exams.
However do take some time off from all the studying and do something meaningful! (:

Every single day, ex-offenders walk out of jail and faced with the challenges of re-integrating into society. To give them a second chance, we expect them to turn over a new leaf. Yet, for them to have a chance to prove their worth, we must overcome our prejudices and welcome them back with us.

As such, to show our strong support in offering a second chance to the ex-offenders, we would like to ask you to join us in this Yellow Ribbon Street Sales Day whereby we will be selling Yellow Ribbons. Each of these Yellow Ribbon is handmade by an inmate and it symbolises his/her hope for forgiveness and acceptance. The funds that are raised from this sale will go towards the Yellow Ribbon Fund.

This is the formal event that will induct new members who joined this year as an official Leo member after reciting the Leo pledge. It will also have the passing over of the Board of Directors where the new Board of Directors for this year will be installed. Fold-A-Crane Project

Dear members,

Do you feel like breaking Singapore book of record? Here is your chance! A group of student initiated a project called “Fold-A-Crane Project” and has invited Leo club to be part of this history making project.

Basically, the project is an eco-social project to raise social awareness of various VWOs and environmental awareness to the corporate and schools during the course of this project. The project revolves around the Fold-A-Crane theme, where cranes will be folded from used paper, and corporate and members of the public can donate a small sum of money (50 cents to 1 dollar) for every crane folded.

You can play your part to be a volunteer for this project and help to raise fund by folding cranes! Of course, CCA points will be awarded too.

Lion's Flag Day

Leo Club will be in support of our sister club, Leo Club of Singapore Raffles City, with their event of Lion’s Flag Day. The proceeds of the Flag Day will go the Lion’s Home for the Elderly as well as the Lions Befrienders Service Association.

New Moon Big Walk

Hello Leo members!

Have you heard about the New Moon Big Walk that has been publicizing locally for a while? If you haven’t, it’s a Big Walk event happening on the 1st of August (Sunday) that is AWESOME. Are you ready to walk alongside Jeanette Aw, Fann Wong and 5000 other participants? ;D

Leo Club has liaised with New Moon to send in participants in this charitable event. For every registrant, New Moon will donate 100 bowls of rice to needy families in the Northeast District of Singapore. The original cost of registration as an individual is $25 per person, but by registering with Leo Club, its only $15!

The costs not only include a T-shirt to show everyone you’ve been at the Big Walk and a goodie bag which has many handy items for the walk, but also a chance to win the lucky draw after the walk! Not to mention the King’s ice cream and Donut Empire at the end of the walk.

So what is the details for the walk?
● Total Distance of 5km
● Non-competitive walk (not run)
● Route Loops Pasir Ris
● Starting and Ending point at Pasir Ris Interchange
● Flag off time at 8am

We aim to raise $20,000.00 for Lions Home for the Elders and Lions Befrienders Service Association this year.

Lions Home for the Elders is one of the first few nursing homes that are accredited by Ministry of Health to provide accommodation, personal and health care for the frail, disabled or sick elderly. The needs of elderly are met through its outstanding spectrum of healthcare services.

Lions Befrienders Service Association (Singapore) aims to provide social, psycho-emotional and physical support to our lonely seniors in the community. Lions Befrienders are continually reaching out to about 1,700 lonely seniors all over Singapore today, through its engaging activities and weekly visitations to enhance our seniors’ quality of life.

We hope to gather 600 volunteers with one spirit, one heart and one mind to reach out to our elderly!

We strongly encourage you to volunteer in this massive, island-wide fundraising project together with like-minded youths from various tertiary institutions. As a volunteer, you will sell specially designed handicraft items to raise funds for the betterment of our elderly.

Would CCA Points be rewarded?

Yes, CCA Points would be awarded.

Can we get CCA Points in advance before CCA System Closure?

We are aware that the CCA points record for Year 3s would end by 26th February 2010. However, we are sorry to say that we are unable to give CCA points in advance for this event.

What exactly would we be selling?

We would be selling a door hanger, something like those "Do Not Disturb" ones you see in hotels. However, it would also double-up as a holder, with designed prints.

Can non-Leos and non-NP students join? How about adults?

Yes, anyone can join in this nationwide event! Non-NP students and members of the public can sign up via Recruitment Form available HERE.

What would I have to do, as a registered WoL volunteer?

You would be participating in street sales of the door hanger. More details would be provided nearer to date.

This talk is organized by the Lions Home for participants to:

(1) Learn how to communicate with the elderly, and
(2) Give participants the chance to understand how Lions Home operates as a home for the elderly.

Date: 1 November 2009 (Sunday)
Time: 2pm - 4pm
Venue: Lions Home for the Elders (Toa Payoh Rise), Level 5 GoldQuest Room

Please report at Thomson Road, Macritchie Reservoir bus stop (refer to map at the end of this post) at 1.30pm on Sunday. We would be walking in together.

Buses available at that stop are 52, 74, 93, 128, 130, 132, 156, 157, 162, 162M, 165 and 166. It is the stop opposite Mount Alvernia Hospital, beside the overhead bridge.

Things to note:

(1) As we’re visiting the elderly, kindly refrain from wearing overexposing clothes (low-cut tops, short skirts, etc.). Do turn up in comfortable wear.

(2) You are not required to bring anything.

(3) Please note that transportation to and fro are NOT provided.

Fight the Stigma- Pledge of Silence
We received overwhelming response from the school population during the two-day recruitment at Atrium last Thursday and Friday.

For those who have signed up, please be reminded that you have to attend a briefing (Choose to attend either on 27 October OR 28 October). The actual day for Pledge of Silence is on 30 October (Friday), while the pledge cards are to be returned by 6 November (Friday).

Pledgers who signed up should have received an email with more details of the event by now.

Seminar for Leos- How to Interact with the Elderly in Nursing Homes
This talk is organized by the Lions Home for participants to:

It's not easy to keep silent and some people might think you’re crazy – but all is done for a good cause.

Hint: You can still communicate using paper and pen, sign language, or wherever your imagination takes you!

In the midst of fun, don’t forget that by keeping silent, we are showing support for people living with HIV/AIDS. While we can’t speak for a day, they can’t speak about their illness for a lifetime because of the stigma against them.

Don’t let them continue living out their illness in silence for FEAR OF ISOLATION and REJECTION.

BE A VOICE, FOR THE VOICELESS.

Fun Fact: This is not just a campus-wide movement, it’s NATION-WIDE! 10 other schools will also be pledging their silence on the 30th October.

Leo Fusion Camp II

Hey Fellow Leo members,

Leo Fusion Camp has proved to be a very meaningful experience for the past two years. This year, the camp is built from the aim to provide you with the opportunity of:

- Building and enhancing leadership skills
- Making friends for life
- Experiencing fun games and exciting adventures

MOST IMPORTANTLY, you will have the chance to experience the truest and most effective way of working with the environment! Leo Club is first and foremost a platform to serve and care for the community, and this camp will give you the exact experience!

On top of that,you are welcomed to bring along your friends who are non-Leo members. This camp is open to all students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Our upcoming events for this month, September 2009, caters to the old aged since Mid-Autum and Hari Raya are here. Come and join us! The details are as followed:

Dates: 23rd and 24th September 2009

Venue: Camp Christine

Beneficiary: AWWA

Time: 2pm to 5:30pm

Reporting Time: 2pm @ Lot 1 Macdonald’s (beside Choa Chu Kang MRT)

Things to bring:

1. Unused Red Packets use for making lanterns (enough will do)

2. Green Plastic ribbons use for making Ketupat

3. Your Ez-link Card (very important, we're busing in)

What we are going to do on that day:

§ communicate with the elderly as and when

§ Play some games together with the elderly

§ Make lantern / ketupat on that day (if we have enough equipments, so please bring some)

Dear Leos,

The Lion Club of Fort Canning along with a few other Lion clubs would be having a children day event: a visit to Science Centre and the Snow City, for children from homes, low income families and etc. The current arrangement is to have the children be brought to the two locations: for games and tour, and some simple performances after that.

Children are around age of primary school, and some from lower secondary. Currently, they are expecting a crowd of 350 students, which would be divided into three groups. As the snow city has a certain capacity, only 120 children would be at the place while the rest would be touring in the Science Centre.

Details:
Date: 4th October 2009
Venue: Singapore Science Centre
Time: 9 am till 1 pm

What's required of the volunteers:
Guides: to guide the children along the destined route, ensuring their safely and interacting with them.
Station Masters (12 pax): to guide the children through the attractions so to facilitate games or any form of activities for the groups of children.

Last of all, ONLY 30 VOLUNTEERS will be sponsored for this event. So First 30 volunteers to sign up with me, gets the trips to both Science Centre and Snow City for free!!! The remaining volunteers (after 30th person signed up) are welcomed to join in, but sorry, you will have to pay the entry fee yourself.

Here's an update on the upcoming Singapore Run.

As the spaces for our school's club and society had exceeded, Ngee Ann Polytechnic would NOT be able to pay for the run for members who signed up.

However, if you're still keen on the run, please sign up directly via http://www.runsingapore.com/ and you would have to pay $25 out of your own pocket. The good news is, CCA POINTS WOULD STILL BE GIVEN.

Hello fellow Leos!

It's the start of the Holidays and Here comes a request for volunteers for a event.
I know, we are definitely killing your holidays xP

This event is to work hand in hand with New Town Seconday School to help them break a record of having over a 100 people holding up flags representing the various countries attending YOG (Youth Olympic Games).

Its really just a local record, and we don't have to do anything aside from
Crowd Control (6~9 people)
Station there and smoothen flow with simple patrol from time to time.
It's simple as hell, like ushering.

Exhibit Style Booth (4X7=21 People)
This is more demanding in work, but alot more fulfilling.
Simply put, you are supposed to do research on your respective continent (to be given upon reply)
Further details will be given on what to find, but its nothing an hour internet could not do (:

This thing is gonna go down on 12 september (actual event) From 10am to 3pm.
There's going to be a simple brief dry run on 2nd september. This is from 11am to 1pm.

As such, It is best if you can make it for both days as you can know what to do etc.

P.S. I know its kinda late to inform you all abt this, but the planning for this was pretty tight. So yeah...

An Induction and Installation (I&I) Ceremony is an annual event where new members are officially inducted as members under the protocols of our father club, Lions’ International Club.

This is to give recognition and identity to members who are willing to commit their time and effort to work with LEO Club to reach out to the community, and gain new experiences and leadership skills.

As this is a formal and compulsory event for new members, your attendance is mandatory. Members who attended the ceremony before are not required to attend again.

Run Singapore 2009 @ Marina Bay Formula 1 Street Circuit

Singapore Cares are organizing a Run Singapore event on the 6th of September 2009.

Hello members!

The signing up for the Induction & Installation Ceremony of Singapore Polytechnic is now closed. Please keep a lookout for our email with further instructions if you've signed up for it.

Anyway, here's another event coming up!

The S21 Sub-Committee is launching the NP Community Service Programme to raise the level of awareness and participation in community service among NP staff. This is in line with 2 main tenets of Singapore 21 : Active Citizenry and Staff Volunteerism. The objectives are as follows:

- ENHANCE awareness of the needs of the community;
- PREPARE staff for community work and give staff opportunities for community service; and
- ADOPT for the long-term an area of community service to participate in (e.g. the terminally ill in hospices, troubled youths in halfway houses or lonely elderly in Homes), or adopt an established Home that has room for voluntary service.

For the second talk in this programme, our speaker will be Ms Chiu Kar Wee, Partnership Marketing Manager of Community Chest.

Ms Chiu will share with us the current social service needs in Singapore and the sectors where volunteers are most needed. She will also touch on the Community Chest and how contributions through the SHARE programme have helped to meet the needs of the less fortunate.

The talk will be held on 30 July 2009 (Thursday) at the Orchid Room (Staffhub) from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

This talk is for the staff of NP, but the organisers have agreed to open up the chance to students too.

Students attending the talk are to note that as this is a talk for the staff, students are to observe proper decorum at the talk.

We're not sure if CCA points would be given for this event at the moment.

Charity Donation Drive

Hello Fellow Leos

We will be collaborating with Areospace Electronice Club to hold a charity donation drive in Ngee Ann Polytechnic to raise funds for a girl. The girl is called Charmaine. She has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. She is currently in the 4th stage and fighting hard.

There is an alternative form of treatment for neuroblastoma offered in the US which could double Charmaine's chances of survival. This treatment has been used in more than 500 patients since 1987. They need to raise a sum of S$420k to send Charmaine for the treatment, and currently they have raised S$330k. So we wish to help Charmaine to raise funds of up to S$5000 within Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Time: 4.30pm
Meeting Venue: Sports hll, Grandstand.

CCA points will be given.

Hello Fellow Leos

Leo Forum is an annual event organized for Leos throughout Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore with the objectives of providing a platform for the Leos to meet, and arena to share, exchange ideas and knowledge and to recognize the deserving Leos and their clubs for their outstanding performance.

The details of the event are
Date: 5th to 7th June 2009 (Friday to Saturday)
Venue: Sunshine Banquet Hall, Penang
Registration Fee: $280RM (aprox. S$120) as of 23.1.2009
Fee includes
- 2-nights accommodation in B-Suite, Bayan Baru (based on 4 sharing in a Studio Suite),
-2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 dinners
-A Forum Kit
-Insurance coverage
This is not an Ngee Ann event hence there will be no insurance coverage from Ngee Ann Poly. The insurance stated above is under the 36th Leo Forum package.
Transportation: Tour Bus (fee to be confirm)
CCA points will be given
There might be subsidy given by our Parent Club.

This event is really worth going for.For such a low price in exchange for an unforgetable experience. Please do give thoughts to it.=)

Leo Fusion Camp has been a great success and it wouldn't be made possible without the campers who actively participate and not forgetting the strong committee team who put everything in place.
